Marble Sinks & Vessel Basins: How to Source Stone Bathroom Pieces
Why Stone Sinks Are a Premium Bathroom Line
Marble vessel sinks, stone basins and carved washbasins are the fastest way to upgrade a bathroom from standard to statement. Hotels, boutique spas and high-end residences order them in sets with matching bathtubs and vanity tops, which makes them a natural add-on sale for any stone supplier — and a higher-margin product than flat tiles or slabs.
Types of Stone Sinks
- Vessel sinks: bowl-shaped basins that sit on top of the counter — the most popular style, easy to install and replace
- Countertop / undermount basins: set into or under the counter surface for a flush, minimalist look
- Wall-mounted basins: sculptural pieces fixed to the wall, popular in modern and spa bathrooms
- Pedestal sinks: freestanding column with integrated basin, a classic choice for small bathrooms
- Integrated countertop sinks: the basin and counter carved from one block — premium and seamless
Stone Choices for Bathroom Basins
White marble (Diana, Carrara-type, Volakas) is the classic basin material — clean, bright, and it ages beautifully. Gray marble (Antique Gray, Silver Travertine) hides water marks better. Travertine gives a warm spa-like matte finish, and onyx creates dramatic backlit feature pieces. For high-traffic commercial bathrooms, dense granite or basalt resists scratching and staining better than marble.
Ask whether the stone is sealed and how often it needs resealing — marble and travertine are porous, and a good penetrating sealer is essential for bathroom use. Suppliers who also produce matching bathtubs and vanity tops make it easy to order a coordinated suite.
Shapes, Sizes & Drain Details
Vessel sinks are typically 30-45cm in diameter or width, 10-15cm deep, with 3-5cm wall thickness. Round, oval, square and rectangular are standard; fluted, scalloped or asymmetrical carvings are the custom routes. Confirm the drain specification before ordering: standard 32mm/1.25in or 45mm/1.75in outlet, overflow hole or overflow-less, and whether the drain is supplied by the buyer or the factory. The drain position must match the countertop hole, so share the faucet and drain model with the supplier.
Custom Carving & Matching Sets
Like bathtubs, custom basins are quoted from a photo or drawing. The flow is: reference image, approval drawing, carving, QC photos, packing. For suites, order the basin, bathtub and vanity top together so the stone veining and finish match — mixed batches from different blocks can show visible differences. Budget 3-6 weeks for custom pieces depending on complexity.
Packing & Shipping
A marble basin ships in a foam-lined wooden crate, individually blocked so it cannot shift. Vessel sinks and countertops are fragile around the drain hole and rim, so QC includes a tap-test for hidden fissures and a check of the rim for chips. Basins move well mixed into 40ft containers with other stone products; FOB Tianjin is standard, and DDP is available for single-piece renovation deliveries. Fragile high-value pieces can be insured for the full value at minimal cost.
QC Checklist
- Drain hole: drilled straight, correct diameter, positioned per drawing
- Interior finish: polished or honed to spec, no grinding marks or scratches
- Rim and edges: no chips, consistent profile, smooth to the touch
- Sealing: penetrating sealer applied and confirmed in the packing list
Request photos of the finished pieces from all angles before dispatch, plus a photo of the drain hole with a calliper if dimensions are critical.
