Basalt & Lava Stone: The Black Pavers, Setts & Garden Stone Guide
Why Basalt Is the New Favorite in Hardscape
Black basalt is having a long moment in landscape and architecture. Its dense, dark, near-black look reads as modern and premium, and technically it is one of the toughest paving stones available — low water absorption, high compressive strength and excellent freeze-thaw resistance. Landscape contractors and architects across Europe, North America and Australia specify basalt cube setts, pavers and palisades for driveways, plazas and contemporary gardens.
Where Chinese Basalt Comes From
The most famous Chinese source is Zhangpu in Fujian province, which produces the dense black basalt sold as Zhangpu Black or G684. Northern sources in Hebei and Inner Mongolia also supply gray and charcoal basalt, plus porous red and black lava stone for decorative and planting use. Knowing the origin helps buyers match color and density expectations — Zhangpu black is the benchmark for paving.
Sizes & Formats
- Cube setts: 10x10x10cm, 12x12x12cm, 15x15x15cm — the classic driveway and plaza sett
- Pavers: 30x30x3cm, 40x40x3cm, 60x30x3cm cut slabs for patios and terraces
- Stepping stones: irregular 30-60cm pieces for garden paths
- Palisades / fence pillars: 10-20cm square, 60-120cm tall, for garden boundaries and retaining edges
- Tactile pavers: truncated-dome and bar pavers for blind pedestrian wayfinding
Finishes: Split, Flamed, Sawn
Natural split (rough cleft) is the classic sett finish — non-slip and traditional. Flamed gives a smooth yet grippy surface that suits driveways and public paving. Sawn or polished finishes are for interior and pool-edge use where a clean look matters. Many buyers order split tops with sawn sides for a uniform, tidy joint.
Lava Stone: The Lighter, Porous Cousin
True lava stone is lighter and porous, with a visibly vesicular (holey) surface. It is prized for decorative walls, planters, water-feature surrounds, BBQ areas and naturalistic gardens, and is much lighter per square meter than dense basalt, which lowers freight. Red, black and gray lava stone are all available. For load-bearing paving stick with dense basalt; for visual texture and planting use lava stone.
Packing, Weight & Shipping
Dense basalt weighs roughly 2.6-2.8 t/m³, similar to granite, so containers fill by weight — about 24-26 tonnes per 20ft, 26-28 tonnes per 40ft. Setts pack tightly in crates or on pallets with shrink wrap and layer separation. Lava stone is lighter and ships more square meters per container. Confirm net weight before booking to avoid overweight surcharges.
QC Checklist
- Color: consistent black/gray across the order, matched to the master sample
- Dimensions: sett heights uniform (+/-2-3mm), sawn faces square
- Density: confirm water absorption (<0.5% for outdoor use) and compressive strength data
- Finish: consistent split/flame treatment, no mixed surfaces on one pallet
Request a small sample block before production — basalt color and texture vary by quarry, and a physical sample settles expectations far better than photos.
